Coach Requirements
As a minimum, ALL coaches are required to have “Community Coach Accreditation” provided through Athletics New Zealand. This ensures police vetting, and completion of child safe-guarding and Drug Free Sport online modules.
While it is not yet compulsory, AUT Millennium strongly recommends that all our coaches become Athletics New Zealand Accredited Coaches.
This is important for the following key reasons:
- Ensures Coach Competency
- Accreditation ensures that coaches have the necessary knowledge, skills, and qualifications to train athletes effectively and safely.
- It establishes a standardized level of coaching quality, especially important for athlete development and injury prevention.
- Promotes Athlete Safety and Well-being
- Accredited coaches are trained in first aid, safeguarding, and appropriate training loads, reducing the risk of physical or psychological harm.
- Ensures they understand ethical practices and how to create a positive environment.
- Maintains Professional Standards
- Like any profession, coaching benefits from a code of conduct and accountability.
- Accreditation often requires ongoing professional development, keeping coaches up to date with latest techniques, science, and rules.
- Enhances Credibility and Trust
- Accredited coaches are more likely to be trusted by athletes, parents, and sports organizations.
- It’s a way to demonstrate legitimacy, especially important when working with youth or elite-level athletes.
- Supports Long-term Athlete Development (LTAD)
- Properly trained coaches understand the developmental stages of athletes and tailor programs, accordingly, promoting sustainable progress rather than short-term results.
